New York Fashion Week AW11 - Part 4:

Again, apologies for the fact that I am so behind with my fashion week posts! This is my final NYFW post, and I have four more collections to share with you...

EDUN

The Edun collection was big on knitwear, with Fair Isle cardigans, knitted dresses and delicate crotchet. The silky patterned layered skirts and blouses were some of my favourite pieces in the collection. I also love the fact that the collection manages to do bold prints that strike the balance of being interesting but not so crazy that you couldn't weave the pieces into a normal wardrobe.

The brand uses ethical manufacturing practices and supports trade and economic development with Africa. I love that this is the concept of the brand and that it doesn't take anything away from the design at all. Edun proves that a brand can have a conscience and be ethical and not trade off style in doing so.

THAKOON

There was definitely a global vibe to the Thakoon collection. With bold colours and prints giving the collection a modern tribal vibe. There was also an 18thC European influence with bustles and garments puffing out at the hip. The inspiration for the collection sounds a bit of strange mix on paper, but it worked and seamlessly so! In fact, it not only worked, but managed to look edgy and sporty on top, which I loved.

I hate that fashion can tend to go a bit dark and gloomy for AW (which, quite frankly, paired with the weather is the last thing I need!) and I love the idea of just going for it with colour and prints. It would definitely brighten my day! And the prints would make me feel like a strong urban warrior, ready to take on the dreary masses.

VERA WANG

Vera Wang knows how to do luxe, and the parkas on display at her AW collection showed that even a traditionally casual item could still be luxe. There was a definite nod to 1930s glamour, with floor sweeping gowns with dropped waists and gorgeous pleats. The feminine vibe was given a bit of Vera Wang edge by the accessories, scrunched long leather gloves and chunky boots.

The colour palette of the chiffon was mostly muted tones including a wine coloured gown, ivory, olive green, pale pinks and a smoky grey. And while the collection did not really stray from the mostly uniformed but slighty varying pleted gowns and luxe parkas, I still found the collection quite appealing.

VIVIENNE TAM

Inspired by Chinese Opera, the Vivienne Tam show could well have ended up a bit costumey. But thankfully that was not the case.  The influence resulted in beautiful embroidered pieces, structured collars and gorgeous pattern. The collection had a hint of opulence without being too OTT and the textures of the garments looked simply beautiful.

The opulence was mixed with tweed and wool pieces, which I think worked really well and gave another layer of interest to the collection. Despite the grand nature of the influence of the collection,  the pieces were still functional and (if I actually had two pence to rub together) I would feel happy wearing them.

Loving this week....

Cougar Town Season 2

I fell in love with Cougar Town when I caught the first season repeated sometime last year on Living. The series is centred around Jules (played by Courtney Cox) a recently divorced mum in her forties and her circle of friends as she moves on to the next chapter in her life. The group is close but hilariously dysfunctional, and the most adult one is probably Jules' geeky teenage son, Travis. Living is now showing the second season, and so far I have not been disappointed, it is just as funny as the first one.

New York Fashion Week AW11 - Part 3:

MARC JACOBS

If you are a regular reader of the blog you will know my love for all things polka dot, and I am in good company as Marc Jacbos seems to be polka dot crazy at the moment too! The dots were everywhere, and were in some cases literally top to toe with pillbox hats adorned with them and even the models tights sported dots.

The overall vibe of the collection had a vintage feel but was mixed with more futuristic looks which kept it fresh. There were definitly 40s influences in the pillbox hats and knee length vintage skirts. Necklines were hight and there was a sense of demure being the new sexy in the air. The pencil skirts and hourglass waists were accented with peplum outlines and boxy jackets.

Shopping is my medicine

I haven't got a great deal of money at the moment but I was happy to have a bit spare (quitting smoking back in November has meant I do have a tiny bit of disposable money) and I always like to get bargains. I thought I would share some of my recent buys with you as I haven't done a 'haul' post for a while.

I love it when fashion and good causes get together and I was dying to get my hands on one of the Vivienne Westwood designed Tshirts for Comic Relief, available at TK MAXX. There are plenty to choose one, and I was a bit gutted that I could only limit myself to buying one! (I have a more detailed post about the range coming up).

New York Fashion Week AW11 - Part 2:

Onwards and upwards with my catch up posts of the various shows from NYFW (my London write ups to quickly follow). Again theses are just my thoughts on the collections that showed at NYFW and the things I personally liked about them

JASON WU

Jason Wu chose a smaller colour palette than usual for the AW collection, which consisted mostly of black and white. The collection mixed a sporty feel with elegant lace detailing. Opulence was the general feel to the collection, with embroidered details, gold and petticoats. This was mixed with masculine tailoring, polished and refined.

I love that Jason Wu really knows how to do glamour, and whilst he is accused of playing it safe by some people, I am always impressed by his collections. I am loving the thigh high slits on show this season, Jason Wu has done it in a way that keeps the balance of sexy and ladylike.

Outfit Pick N Mix - NYFW

Fashion week is like honey that attracts the most glamourous and fashionable in swarms. There are some amazing images all over the net of people working their own personal style at the shows. For this week's Outfit Pick N Mix I have decided to do a NYFW special. Make sure you check out the sites mentioned though because there are tonnes more amazing pics.

New York Fashion Week AW11 - Part 1:

Sorry that I am a bit behind in my show write ups, hopefully I will catch up quickly though! If you are a regular reader, you will know that I like to just write as myself. I don't like to imitate other people's blogs/style. So I wanted to share with you my thoughts on some of the shoes from fashion week, not just write up a description of the show from start to finish. And I wanted to write about the things that I really liked, rather than pick up on any negatives.

So without further delay, here is part one of my thoughts on NYFW AW2011 shows.

BCBG MAX AZRIA

The BCBG Max Azria collection was clean and precise, whilst keeping a feminine feel. Everything felt chic and sophisticated, and the things that made the collection for me were the details. The high neck white tops with contrasting black cuffs and the monochrome pieces with flashes of pillar box red particularly caught my eye. I also loved the plunging neckline, drop waist dresses that were kept demure by layering over the white turtlenecks.

The make up and accessories reflected the understated feel of the clothing. The models' hair was slicked back with a perfect side parting, the footwear was without fuss and framed clutch bags or simple cross-body bags were the order of the day.

Vintage & Craft Fair in Liverpool

I love it when I get emails that let me know about great fashion happenings, especially if they are local ones. So I was happy to get an email recently letting me know about a Vintage and Craft fair that's going to be happening in Liverpool in March. I will definitely be going, it sounds like a great event!

The event is being held by Liverpool John Moor es University Fashion and Communication students at Heebie Jeebies, Seel St. Liverpool on the evening of the 25th March.

The evening will consist of Music, fashion, jewelery, cakes and most importantly local artists and designers will be bringing their crafts to the table.

With several stalls to rummage around you can find some hidden gems! The students are hoping to raise money for charity throughout the night so it's all for a good cause.

Come along and show your support, grab some bargains and dance the night away at one of Liverpool's hot spots. Goody bags for the first 40 guests so make it snappy, doors opens at 6:30, £1 entry-proceeds go to Teenage Cancer Trust. Hope to see you there!

Lottie's Finishing School - The Story So Far

Back in June (can't believe it was that long ago!) I embarked on following the fabulous Lottie's Finishing School on one of my favourite blogs Lottie Loves. I loved the idea instantly and thought that it was a great opportunity not only for blog post inspiration but also to address things in my own life that I wanted to address.

I wanted to just write a little recap post, as we are now up to M (I am up to J as I am a little behind!) ! I also wanted to make any new blog followers aware of Lottie's Finishing School and give you an idea of what it is all about.

Here is a little description of what Finishing School is all about from Lottie...

Outfit Pick N Mix - Printed Tees

The humble Tshirt can often be overlooked as a fashion item. But this 'go to' item can be the basis for a whole host of outfits and looks. One of my favourite ways to mix it up in a Tshirt is by wearing a graphic print tee. So for this week's Outfit Pick N Mix  I have searched out some fantastic outfit inspiration showing people rocking the printed Tshirt.

Trend - Pleats

Pleats were all over the SS11 catwalk, in every imaginable variation. Whether box or razor sharp, sheer or structured, there are so many choices to fall in love with the pleat this season. Pleats can add an extra dimension to a garment, especially if you are wearing one colour. It is also a great way of wearing a free flowing look if you are not of the boho tribe.

One of the key things to remember when wearing pleats is that it creates volume and bulk, so avoid wearing pleats in areas that you to don't want to add too! You just have to remember to keep the proportions right. For an easier option, try a pleated dress, then you don't have to worry about perfecting the balancing act.

Style Steal - Rose Byrne

I am loving Rose Byrne's look at the Tommy Hilfiger show at NFW. The peg-leg trousers are a perfect balance for a pussy-bow blouse. And the red shoes are a great choice.  The pussy-bow blouse is a great investment at the moment, and will serve you well right through Spring/Summer.

Loving this week....

Little Big Planet 2

If you haven't played either of the Little Big Planet Games, I suggest you do! It is the wonderful creation of Media Molecule and there is so much to love about both games. The levels are amazingly designed and each one is full of so much creativity and genius. And when you are finished playing through the levels there is a whole other dimension to the games, where you can create your own levels to play and a massive online community in which you can interact with other players and play the levels they have created as well as inviting them to come and play yours! And if that isn't enough, the main character Sack Boy can be dressed in all manner of amazing and hilarious costumes (more creativity, and an added bonus if you are obsessed with clothes *ahem*) he is also super cute.

Why I wont be celebrating Valentine's Day

First things first, I am not saying that I hate Valentine’s Day, nor am I saying that don’t think that people should celebrate it. But I don’t ‘do’ Valentine’s Day. Now you may think that I am cynical and a spoil sport but I would like to share my reasoning with you

My poor other half get some stick when he has to explain to people that I don’t do Valentine’s Day. He has been frequently told that I am just saying it to make him happy and that I am secretly harbouring the desire for him to ignore my requests that we pretend the whole thing doesn’t exist. If anyone knows me well enough, I am not the kind of person who would play those kind of mind games with my other half! I am well aware that my other half is not a mind reader and if I say something I mean it! (Also it is pretty insulting to both me and my other half that I would just feign disinterest to be submissive!)

My reasons for skipping out on this ‘holiday’ are:

Style Crush: Paloma Faith

This month's style crush is the wonderful Paloma Faith. Prior to being a singer, Paloma worked as a magician's assistant, a burlesque performer, life model, ghost train ghost and actress amongst other things and her wardrobe is as varied and colourful as her CV. For me, Paloma Faith embraces fashion and getting dressed in a way that is not just something for special occasions. She mixes a vast array of eras and styles and makes them part of her own unique style.

Outfit Pick N Mix - Orange Juice

One of the big colour trends for SS11 is Orange. I know that orange can be a pretty scary colour choice for most people, but you don't have to do the look head to toe. Have a look at these outfits for a bit of orange inspiration.

Trend - Polka Dots

Following my last Outfit Pick n Mix post, I had lots of people asking me to find some great polka dot buys. So I decided that it would be best to choose polka dots as the theme for this weeks trend post. With the likes of Miu Miu and Moschino rocking the head to toe polka dot on the SS11 catwalk, it is definitely not going away this season.

For me it is a bit of a cheat to have this as a trend post, because I always love having polka dot on rotation in my wardrobe! It never goes out of fashion for me, so it is beyond a trend.

The Hills will always be a guilty pleasure of mine, and as trashy as it is you cannot deny the great fashion taste of certain members of the cast. My favourite person in The Hills was Whitney Port. Wonder Woman & Mac Collaboration

Ladies, MAC has done it again! They brought us the Hello Kitty collaboration, they brought us the Disney Venomous Villains collaboration and now the Wonder Woman Collection!

And like the Venomous Villains collection, the collection is inspired by the character and costume. The packaging looks amazing, and I have to admit is a step up from the Venomous Villains.

Set for release in the US 10th February, and due for international release in March, the collection includes; lip gloss, eyeshadow, mascara, blush, eyeliner, and even a make up bag.

Pink Angel Designs

If you are a regular reader of the blog, then you will know that I am a bit of an accessory fiend.  You will also know that I am also a strong supporter of small independent fashion businesses. So I love it when I get contacted by small businesses that want to share what their work with my readers.

My attention was recently brought to Pink Angel Designs, a gorgeous business that sells handmade jewellery and charms. It is the creative baby of Kelly Allum, a craft designer who is based in Liverpool. Everything that is sold on the site is designed and handmade by Kelly herself.

Stylish Blogger Award - 7 things....

I got a really nice email  a couple of days ago (amongst all the spam telling me I had won a zillion pounds!) from the lovely Carol from My Stylisms. She has awarded me a Stylish Blogger Award, which involves blogger sharing the love for other bloggers. One of the things I really love about blogging is the sense of community that it has brought me. I am not competitive in nature and I always think there is room for other blogs, so long as people stay honest in what they do, everyone has their own unique offering. So to Carol, I say a big...
